We used to spend more than we expected and didn't save enough.
We have both tried budget planning but it was too much work for
little gain.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Christophe and his wife started
tracking their expenses in an unusual way: focusing on their
family of six “burn rate” instead of how much money was left in
each sub-budget.
If you burn too fast you won't end the month as you'd hoped.
Surprisingly, this simple shift in focus made all the difference. They could see at a glance whether they were on track to make it through the month, making small changes in real time without needing to overhaul everything.
They became more aware of their daily spending pace, and that awareness alone was enough to stop them from overspending.
The method was light and delightful but editing a spreadsheet on
mobile was not. After months of succesful practice, Christophe
talked Baptiste into turning it into a mobile app. He was
skeptical but agreed to prototype the idea.
Once Baptiste started using the prototype he realized its
beautifully simple effectiveness.
That's how Paktol started.
Our usage guides us, allowing us to refine the idea while keeping its essential simplicity.
You too, you can benefit from Paktol's effective simplicity!
Frequently Asked Questions
The Psychology of Paktol
Paktol succeeds because it aligns with our natural behavior and needs. By simplifying financial management, it reduces cognitive load, allowing users to focus on what matters: knowing what they can spend now or soon. This approach makes managing finances less intimidating and encourages consistency. It also taps into psychological principles like positive reinforcement and real-time decision-making, helping users make better choices.
What being in "green" means?
With time you collect money, if you don't spend what has been collected you are in "green". The collected amount is what can be reasonnably spend at all time. Walk this line and everything will be fine by the end of the month.
What being in "red" means?
Being in red happens when you are spending too fast given your current position. You may find yourself in the red during challenging situations. When facing such times, it’s impossible to completely stop spending. Even moderate ongoing costs can push back your timeline for returning to the green. Stay strong and frugal during these times!
How can I categorize my spendings?
You don’t need to. Categorizing won’t change the guidance and would just add unnecessary complexity, encouraging analysis and reporting—things Paktol deliberately avoids.
I signed for a loan, how should I enter it in Paktol?
If it’s short-term (like an installment plan), enter each payment as it happens. For a longer-term loan, adjust your spending goal by subtracting the installment.
How Paktol can help me with my financial investments?
Paktol sole purpose is to help you finish your month afloat. We proud ourselves at being the best for managing day-to-day expenses. We don't want or plan to integrate all other aspects of money management
Can I set savings goals?
Yes, Paktol helps you plan by showing what’s safe to spend now while considering your future goals. Just reduce your spending goal to ensure you’re setting aside enough for your savings.
Can I connect Paktol to my bank and automate everything?
No, Paktol is designed to keep you actively engaged with your money. Automatically syncing with your bank would take away the hands-on approach that helps you stay aware of your spending habits. By manually entering expenses, you build a stronger connection to where your money is going, which leads to better decisions.
What happens at the end of the month in Paktol?
At the start of each month, Paktol resets to zero to keep you
focused on the present. Any surplus or deficit from the previous
month is added to the piggy bank in the top left of the screen.
The piggy bank should balance out over the year—if it stays high,
you’re encouraged to lower your spending goal to optimize Paktol’s
guidance; if it’s low, your goal may be too tight.
